Have you ever sat across from someone you love who told you plainly they are not sure God is even real? Maybe you have felt that question rise up in your own heart at two in the morning, after a prayer you feel has still not been answered. If so, you are not as far from faith as you might think.
Most of the time, doubt like that does not come from studying your way into atheism. It comes from praying for something and not getting the answer you wanted, until the silence starts to feel like absence. I understand that pull. I have felt it myself, more than once in almost fifty years of ministry.
Here is what I want you to know before we go any further. God is not afraid of your questions. He is not offended when you bring Him your confusion instead of your polished, put together faith. Isaiah 1:18 records God Himself saying, "Come now, and let us reason together." Not later. Not once you have it all figured out. Now, as you actually are.
A lot of us were taught, without anyone ever saying it directly, that real faith means you stop asking questions. But serving God with your emotions alone is not the whole picture Scripture gives us. We are also told to love Him with our minds, which means honest thinking, held up against the light of God's Word, has always had a place in a healthy walk with Him.
A faith that has never been reasoned through will struggle to survive a real trial. So let us reason through this one together, in four parts, what the universe itself points to, what history confirms, and what your own life can prove that no argument ever could.
Acts 17:24-28, records the Apostle Paul standing on Mars Hill in Athens, addressing a group of philosophers who had literally built an altar labeled to an unknown God. Paul did not mock them for their uncertainty. He introduced them to the God they already sensed was missing.
Look at your own hand for a moment. The coordination behind that simple motion, your heart keeping rhythm without your permission, your DNA carrying instructions passed down from parents to children across generations, none of that had to work this precisely. The more science uncovers about how the human body and the universe actually function, the more complex and ordered it turns out to be, not less. Order does not arrive by accident. It points to a Designer.
When the early Apostles were arrested for preaching about Jesus, a respected Jewish teacher named Gamaliel gave the council this advice, recorded in Acts 5:38-39, "If this work is of men, it will fail on its own, but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow it." Nearly two thousand years later, it has not failed.
Even King Agrippa, listening to Paul defend himself in Acts 26:28, admitted he was almost persuaded to become a Christian. Almost is not nothing. And the honest reality is that not everyone you share your faith with will be fully persuaded either, but that has never been a reason to stop telling the story.
The last, and honestly the strongest, argument for God's existence we will cover today is not a philosophical one. Here it is, "A changed life for which there is no natural explanation." Philippians 3:10 talks about knowing Him and knowing the power of His resurrection. There is a real difference between knowing about God and actually knowing Him.
My own testimony is not dramatic. I gave my life to Christ as a boy because I was afraid a bull was going to come through the picture window by my bed, land on me and I would die unready to meet God. My father comforted me and led me to Jesus right there in our living room in front of the old stone fireplace in Diamond, MO. That is it. It is almost funny to tell now, but it's real, and the power of it still holds today.
If you have ever told someone about how Christ changed you, whether it was dramatic or as simple as mine, you have already given the strongest evidence available for God's existence, and you did not need a debate to do it. That same theme runs through what it looks like to defend your faith without needing to win an argument, and why faith was never meant to need an audience to be real.
None of this is about arguing anyone into believing. It is about staying honest, continuing to reason, and staying close enough to Him that you keep experiencing what only He can prove.
